I’m in the process of doing a LOT of things on the back end of my business. I have SO much planned to unveil come September that to say I’m stressed and overworked would be the understatement of the century. But bringing it all together has not only been challenging, it has left me with far less time to write for you.
Of course, the less I post, the less traffic I get. Couple that with the fact that it’s mid-summer and most of you are on vacation or soaking up the sun in the last few weeks before school starts, and July traffic dropped significantly from June (which was also a bit down from May).
Here’s the curious part.
I made more money in June than I did in May. And July was my highest grossing month ever. Even better, I took on NO coaching or consulting clients in July, meaning that I beat out all previous months’ of revenue based on advertising and affiliate marketing alone, whereas my coaching/consulting revenue in June was HALF of what I made.
So what are the biggest money-making lessons learned in July of 2007?
- I have truly learned the value of a targeted visitor. Not just from another blog or site in my niche. But I’ve also been experimenting with driving hyper-targeted traffic with AdWords, which made me realize I have been leaving money on the table. I more than doubled my return on investment on Shoestring Smarts alone. (For a how to get started with PPC for your blog, I wrote a summary post over there today.)
- I have never been more grateful for the power of networking. Going to BlogHer and Ad:Tech were fun, exciting, and educational. But I opened up more doors to advertising opportunities last week than I have in my entire blogging history. If I had to guess, I would say that the 4 days I spent at Navy Pier (between both conferences) will net out in tens of thousands in revenue over the next 12 months. I kid you not.
- There’s nothing more discouraging than your first year of trying to make money online. I think that’s why so many people give up - really, truly, it takes a long time to get the hang of driving traffic and revenue on the internet. I almost gave up several times. I am so flipping glad I stuck it out. I hope you will, too.
- The Long Tail is your secret to success. There are a lot of home business sites out there, but relatively few home business blogs. eMoms at Home just became the #1 blog dedicated to Home Business according to Technorati (and Alexa). Is it a great accomplishment? Of course, but honestly, it was a relatively small mountain to conquer. This is the long tail - find your niche, then dominate it.
- It takes a hell of a lot of people skills to make money on the internet from home. You have to sell. You have to deal with customer service. You have to build relationships. I heard someone recently state they wanted to know how to make money on the internet without having to deal with anyone else. I said it can’t be done.
- There is no one-size-fits-all formula for internet marketing success. Even one of my mentors who is on track to gross 300K annually has no easy answers - usually when I ask a question, he tells simply tells me, “Well, test it out and see if it works”. I hate that answer, but he’s right!
I am not worried at all about this temporary dip in traffic. Autumn is traditionally a very busy time in business, and I know that between the growth plan I have in place and the time of year, traffic will skyrocket in a few weeks. To be honest, it’s good to have a bit of a slow period to be able to prepare for it all.
But I hope my experience gives you a little insight and patience into the business of blogging. And also a reality check - you don’t need to be an A-lister or in the Alexa top 10,000 to make money online.

Great job on doing a few new things that have resulted in July being your best month ever! I also set a personal high for earnings in July, although on a much smaller scale.
I love the tips, particularly the one from your mentor.
Hang in there Wendy!
I think your insights are right on the mark. I remember growing up our next door neighbor, a WAHM in the 1970’s, told me that in order to be successful you needed to have *stick-to-it-tiveness* …
>>>I almost gave up several times. I am so flipping glad I stuck it out. I hope you will, too.
Congratulation on your new Technorati rank (and your profits). Your success is encouraging to the rest of us. Thanks for sharing your insights and money-making lessons. I’m sure your traffic will go back up once you increase your posts.
Very motivational! I have taken a step back from blogging for the summer. But I am now even more ready to dive back in once the kids are back in school.
I’ve seen a lot of advice where you can tell the author had no real experience (and probably wasn’t making any real money, either). This post was one of the most realistic and accurate I’ve read on the subject. Thanks for telling it like it is. And yeah, it’s definitely quality, not quantity, when it comes to qualified or relevant traffic.
Until now August has been a record breaking income month. I’ve created two more blogs and that is giving me up to 5 times more money a day (5$ yesterday)
Wendy,
Thanks for the words of encouragement - especially the bit about not giving up - and reality check about what you need to do to succeed online.
Hi Wendy, I’m really pleased to see that you’re bucking the trend.
I know of one other eMom who’s doing pretty well for herself, too.
And she too will attest to the sheer effort needed to stay out there at the front.
But the rewards are that the two of you are independently wealthy.
It’s through Shena that I found you via StumbleUpon. So if she rates you, who am I to argue?
But you are an a-lister now wendy
Congrats on the #1 spot on Technorati for home based businesses! That’s quite an accomplishment! Thanks also for the encouragement.
I just started doing some monetization this week on my blog (Amazon, BlogHer, Text Link) but it’s sort of chicken and egg: you need more traffic to see the click thru’s/conversions which results in higher quality ads.
I can imagine your stress, because I’m feeling it a bit too. It’s just hard trying to run a business and keep the balance needed to be a good mother too. It’s always a work in progress.
These income tips are very helpful.
Looking forward to seeing your new stuff this fall!
Well done with this and your success Wendy!
Newbie bloggers: Take note and even bookmark this post. You can learn a lot from it =)
Well Wendy, I certainly am impressed! You are an inspiration for all those Moms out there looking to enter the blogging arena… Dads too! Great information, advice and encouragement.
I havent tried even once to make money from my blog. Perhaps I should . . . It’s been a labor of love for a year (just had our one-year anniversary last weekend), and I don’t even know if it could convert into income. Hmm. I’ll have to think about that some more.
Great post … glad to see you progressing. I haven’t had a chnace to be around much in the past few months but I am glad I stopped by to read this. Even though some of the comments are congratulatory about Technorati, it’s nice to see someone writing about actual money-making insatead of chasing the nebulous rankings which actually don’t bring in a dime.
I don’t know what plugin you’re using to allow users to subscribe to comments, but it doesn’t work when they want to unsubscribe. It says they need a key.
Great job, Wendy.
Your PPC info will really help me.
So…have you ever considered posting your monthly blogging income broken down by source to help us readers even more?
It was great meeting you at BlogHer.
Keep up the excellent work,
Paula
Your statement:
“There’s nothing more discouraging than your first year of trying to make money online.”
… could not be more true. But, you’ve inspired me to forge ahead. I’m only about three months into it so i’ve got a long ways to go.
Ah, Paula - I KNOW you have been after me to publish this for a while! I may put up a post with some percentages, but I really don’t like talking about how much money I make online - some people would be totally impressed - others would think it is peanuts.
At this point, nearly half of what I make is from direct advertisers, then ad networks slightly beat out affiliate income.
Hi Wendy, thanks so much for your inspiration, especially point #3…”it takes a long time to get the hang of driving traffic and revenue on the internet. I almost gave up several times. I am so flipping glad I stuck it out.”….this definitely isn’t a “get rich quick” type of business, I really appreciate reading your personal progress.
Congratulations on your success, Wendy!
Inspirational to say the least. I learned a few things, that’s for sure…bookmarked this blog.
I have noticed some thing too in my short time blogging. THe more consistent I am, the more visitors I get. When I put my posts on a schedule to show at the same time everyday, I get way more traffic than ever before!
I think blog automation is key to rising very high, very fast. I’m still learning a LOT, constantly reading, learning, forging relationships — bu the end result as you say is well worth it. I really like this blog and the community it fosters. And the advice is excellent!
How encouraging this post is Wendy and spurs me on to do more with my site.
I got very despondent a few weeks ago when my Technorati rankings dropped by 30 points, etc
It is also uplifting in that I have had a week off with flu and am behind in all areas, thanks to your 7 days to a better blog and setting up the abundance thinking Blog carnival the traffic and rankings are on the rise.
Your Blog gives great mentorship to me, thank you.
I can also see attending Blog World in Los Vegas in November will be very worthwhile
Thanks for the tips, and the reminder to be patient!
This was very informative, not to mention inspiring. Congratulations on all your hard work paying off!
