Have you made any domain name mistakes like the following companies?

Experts Exchange (at www.expertsexchange.com)

Who Represents (at www.whorepresents.com)

Graphic Arts Exchange (at www.graphicartsexchange.com)

Speed of Art (at www.speedofart.com)

IP Anywhere (at www.ipanywhere.com)

Morrison and Foerster (at www.mofo.com)

Apetit (at www.apetit.com - they just messed the whole naming thing up!)

And probably the worst offender of all is Cumming First Methodist Church in Cumming, GA (at www.cummingfirst.com)

Plus two legendary mistakes that are now retired:

Mole Station Native Nursery (at www.molestationnursery.com)

Italian Power Generator (at www.powergenitalia.com)

Well, hopefully you won’t be haunted with a domain name like one of these for the rest of your life. :O

The Method to My Madness

The real reason I wanted to share these with you is that I wanted to give a shout out to David over at PickyDomains.com. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I am in the process of starting up a new support forum site for families of alcoholics - and David and his team did an unbelievably creative and GREAT job at picking a domain for the site: SecondHandDrink.com (which is coming soon!).

In fact, they came up with over 70 choices that took me more than an hour to go through and evaluate, because most of their ideas were just phenomenal. I’m after him to raise his prices because I think that $50 for such a great naming service is too cheap for what they offer. But until he listens to me, you might want to hire his team now. ;)

This is hilarious. For some reason I’m not getting the molestationnursery one though. Maybe it’ll hit me in a few minutes :). Thanks for sharing.

This hurled me on the floor laughing, and i was on the Brown Line reading it on my mobile Google Reader! A great post to end a hectic workweek, but food for thought on the overall branding task for many businesses.

ROFL - That’s why it’s always a good idea to ask a few close friends before going ahead and purchasing your domain.

That sure lightened up my day. Thanks!

This cracked me up. It took me a minute to get the molestationnursery one, too, like it did for the first person. How would you like to send your kids to a nursery that advertises that they molest kids? (Molestation Nursery)

I’m wondering if “mofo” wasn’t on purpose.

Yea…I second the ROFLs above. You can find lots of amusing things online but this had me literally laughing out loud!
Thanks as usual Wendy…oh and one quick question…what’s your take on the SEO importance of domain naming? I think I get the branding significance.

Good gosh, this had me laughing! But I’m the one with Putzworld in my blog address, so I’m sure others are having a laugh too. I can’t help it, I married a Putz!

ROTFLMAO and DOIP

I read expertsexchange once in a while and i never caught that until now.

MoFo is a real law firm and it was done actually on purpose. They even sell hats, t-shirts, and more if you have them on retainer. If i remember correctly the minimum retainer was 20k

what about this one?

http://www.penisland.net/

they’re selling pens by the way! ;)

Interesting post. I’ve used ExpertsExchange for years and never thought of what it actually says. Funny how things come out after looking at them a different way.

Very funny. I wonder how many of them realise.
