Good friend and top commentator Alex Shalman has started a goals meme. He asks a rather long list of bloggers what their lifetime goals are - as in, on your deathbed, what do you want to have accomplished in your life?

I have given some serious thought to this as I started and grew this blog and business. I check new business and life decisions against my ‘ultimate outcome’ to ensure things fit into my ‘big picture plan’ before I act.

The tricky thing about this approach is that sometimes a half-pursued goal actually serves the ultimate outcome better than a fully-accomplished goal. For example, starting eSelfHelp was once my main goal, and this site got started in the process. But a few months into it, my heart told me to devote my energy to this site, and it has proven to be the right path.

In other words, sometimes we need to let go of the form and allow things to unfold on their own (that’s very Zen of me, eh??).

So, my Ultimate Outcome is to teach millions of people how to listen to their inner wisdom and follow their hearts.

My current, rather lofty but realistic goals I have in place to support my ultimate outcome are:

  1. Launch a motivational speaking career
  2. Fund a program that will allow me to bring tools, resources and inspiration to welfare moms who want to start their own businesses
  3. Continue to run my businesses with a flexible schedule to allow time with my family on a regular basis

My current, totally unrealistic goals are here because this is what I want to accomplish most in life… but whether or not they are even possible isn’t really the point. I hold onto them because they make me stretch who I am every day in the hopes that I can somehow get into the same solar system where these things could happen:

  1. Build bridges between the world’s religions so that no more wars are started “in the name of God” (whatever God you choose to follow)
  2. Develop a psychological approach that will end alcoholism and addictive behavior for anyone that wants to quit, but hasn’t been able to with the current models of therapy available to us (I actually believe the ‘mind technology’ exists, it’s just not widely available as it would put a lot of pharmaceutical companies and therapists out of business)

Gosh, writing this post has been a bit more emotional than I had anticipated. :D

Back to our regularly scheduled programming: the meme. I’m going to tag some old and new readers and request to read about your goals too (I think I’ll surprise some of you - I’ve been watching who comes and visits frequently!!).

Write about your dreams and tag some more people (here’s the full scoop on the meme).

GARRR! And I saw that too! I was so bummed Alex tagged so many of my friends, so I double checked his list while putting mine together. I think I was scanning too quickly looking for “Essential Keystrokes”. :D

Great goals.. do not think of them as totally unrealistic. What if you could find just two people from opposing religions that hate each other, and help them to become friends. What if you could find 10? What if all those 10 teach 10 more who teach 10 more… Don’t think of it as unrealistic, just start small.

    Thanks Wendy. I’m on it.

BTW: At this point I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that there will be absolutely no bloggers left to tag. Not at the rate you guys are going!

That’s a pretty nifty meme. Iuno what I’d want done before I die. Other then get my own bookstore up and running and get a tattoo. :D But that’s about it.

Ok, I went out on a limb for this one! I even added PICTURES. What surprised me is how many of my dreams have little to do with what I’m doing right now. I want my own business so I can have the flexibility and cash to do these other things. It makes me think why I can’t have them right now or what I’d need to do.
Thanks for bringing out my creative side on a day when I was feeling stuck.
Also, good to make a new friend with an other internet marketer who is a woman!

(Okay, that was bad — sorry!) I am really enjoying your blog and your experiences. I’d better get to work on this–

Hey Wendy, I was linking…one of your lofty goals is to be a bridge between the religions. I’d love to talk with you more about that some time.
