A Peek into the Inspiring Mind of Glenda Watson Hyatt

As mentioned last week, Glenda Watson Hyatt is stopping by eMoms at Home today on her Virtual Book Tour.

Regular readers know that I love to talk about overcoming obstacles. And about turning big problems into big opportunities. Due to oxygen deprivation at birth, Glenda has cerebral palsy and she is an inspiring living example of positivity in action.

Read on as we discuss blogging, viral marketing, entrepreneurialism, and the gifts life gives us.

[Note as well how she is a master at the law of attraction as well - she knows how to focus on what she wants - and leaves what she doesn’t want in the dust! ;) ]

Wendy: Glenda, many people have large obstacles to overcome. Some people let the obstacles stop them in their tracks. Others turn them into an opportunity – they live their lives as a lesson, not as a warning. Like you!

What are some of the core beliefs you have about who you are as a person that has enabled you to transform your challenges into gifts?

Glenda: Wow, that is a great question! Not one I had considered before. I believe I am of value and have something to contribute to society; the challenge is finding an effective way to contribute. I am a positive person, meaning that I focus on what I do have rather than on what I don’t have or on what I can’t do. I am determined and ambitious; I am not content to sit back and let life pass me by. Life is too precious and there are too many opportunities to sit on life’s sidelines.

Wendy: What inspired you to make the decision to become an entrepreneur?

Glenda: Actually, it was a decision based on necessity. I wasn’t having any luck finding employment; I had no doubt it was due to my disability, but I couldn’t prove it. After all, that is discrimination, which is illegal! My next option was self-employment. I had been interested in heading in that direction and, with no jobs on the horizon, I took a leap, enrolled in a Self-Employment Program and haven’t looked back.

Wendy: What are some of your tips and tricks for staying inspired and motivated when things don’t go the way you planned?

Glenda: Between having a physical disability and being an entrepreneur, the unexpected often comes up and plans go awry. I find being flexible helps and not getting upset if plans don’t go as I had wanted; although, sometimes that is easier said done. Quick thinking and creative problem solving can a sometimes salvage a plan or make plan B better than plan A. In the end, I keep my key or core goal and focus on how I can get there. When plans really get derailed, I take a break, replenish my motivation, for example by listening to Rod Stewart’s “Never Give Up On a Dream”, and then I kick butt to get the job done.

Wendy: You recently started a blog to help promote your self-published book. And you have already received some interviews from prominent bloggers in a relatively short period of time. What are some of the things you have done to open up these doors of opportunity for yourself? And how is your blog helping you with your overall marketing and promotional efforts?

Glenda: It comes down to building relationships with these bloggers; first, by reading and commenting on their blogs, and getting to know them through emails, podcasts, and such. The interview with Andy Wibbels – the one that connected you and I – was rather impromptu. He had emailed me a question about his teleseminar the previous night and, in my response back to him, I asked if he would like to host my appearance – for the next day! He responded immediately with the interview questions. It was that easy! But, I would not have dared asking Andy had we not had that established relationship; that is so key.

At the moment, I’m focusing on my blog and virtual book tour to promote my autobiography I’ll Do It Myself. It is enabling me to get the word out about my book in a medium in which I’m most comfortable: the written word. And I’m beginning to see other promotional opportunities arise, which I will pursue once this virtual book tour is completed. Just yesterday I received an email inviting me to speak about my blogging experience at conference in Montreal – all expenses paid! I still need to make sure this invitation is legitimate and such, but that is the amazing thing about blogging – you never know where it may lead you!

Wendy: Your Virtual Book Tour was a brilliant marketing move to promote your book “I’ll Do it Myself”. I know my readers are the kind of people who would want to help spread the word. How can they help you do that?

Glenda: One reason for undertaking a virtual book tour was that I envisioned the word spreading through blogs, ezines and emails. Viral marketing is one virus I’m hoping to catch! It would be awesome if your readers would mention I’ll Do It Myself on their blog or ezines. Also, I still have dates available if they would like to host an appearance on my virtual book tour.
