You Don’t Have to Be Nelson Mandela or Mother Theresa to Change the World

Small Business Ideas Forum

A friendly place to find help & encourage one another

Change the World!I have been asked to speak at an upcoming (soon to be announced) blogging conference in May. I’ve been giving a lot of thought, of course, to what I would talk about to a group of 200+ bloggers.

An interesting commonality between many of the readers of this blog (in fact, many bloggers in general) is that all of them blog from a place of passion and contribution. It seems as though all of us take our job rather seriously - our blogs, indeed, are really our “mission work”. No matter what your spiritual beliefs are, I know each and every one of you are finding a way to turn your past mistakes into gifts for your own readers. You are writing and adding value. You are giving. You are making a difference.

Indeed, you are changing the world.

Think I’m over-stating things? Do read on.

Let’s start with just a few examples of the incredible and life-altering actions you are taking with your own blogs:

Darren is enabling his readers to increase their wealth and free up time to spend with loved ones, as well as serving as inspiration to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.

Craig is inspiring his readers to live a healthy life - and perhaps saving a few lives in the process.

So is Katiebird, as she leads by example on her journey back to health from diabetes and obesity.

Ariane is helping her readers clear out emotional clutter in their minds and lives.

Jessica is doing the same, and blogging openly and vulnerably, sharing so that others can benefit from her hard-won lessons learned.

Ben in showing his readers how they can indeed pursue their long-held dreams.

Steve is bravely challenging his readers to think for themselves (sometimes in direct conflict with his own ideas!!).

Kelly is empowering women to take control of their schedules and create true work-life balance.

Char works tirelessly to help other small businesses succeed with their web design and marketing efforts - remember, every small business is the fruition of someone else’s dream, too.

KWiz is devoting time to her ministry of helping to heal women’s pain, thereby freeing them from a past that used to weigh them down.

Kathleen is such a wealth of bubbly great energy and inspiration that it’s contagious - and in the process she’s helping to destroy negativity just by showing up.

Kammie is the same way - almost on steroids! Her passion for life spills out of the computer screen and into the life of every one of her readers.

Sarah is coding feverishly so that other bloggers can pursue their own missions with her expert help.

Kim is building a community for moms to share, grow and learn from each other, eventually making them happier and more balanced parents.

CJCM is unraveling the myths of IT from the other side of the world, making a global impact from Kuala Lumpur.

Liz lives and breathes her father’s motto “You’re only a stranger, but once.” Her blog is a welcoming place everyone can call home.

Easton is waking up corporate America to a new sense of transparency and accountability.

So let’s do the math.

17 bloggers, not even including myself. I guarantee each one of them has made a significant impact on at least three of their readers in their blogging history (I’m way underestimating here, for now).

That’s 51 lives changed.

And when lives change, so do the lives of the people around them. In fact, even more so than via blogging, because in person encounters are powerful indeed. I guarantee that each of those 51 people were nicer, happier, and more open with at least 3 people they know.

That’s a running total of 204 lives changed.

Blogging ripples across the planetBut then the ripple effect is even more compelling, because if each of those people just touch one more life, the running total doubles to 408.

And then to 816. To 1632. To 3264. Eventually landing me at 8,669,184 - that is, until you double that number too. Kind of like compound interest.

And this doesn’t even take into account that most of these bloggers have touched way more lives than just three.

Now you might discount the changes these people are making. But here is the great thing about change. It doesn’t need to be big to have a big impact. Little changes grow and evolve with time. A little change made now will be mountain-moving later - also a like compound interest. :)

The compound interest of making little ripples in the world via blogging

This is the effect of 17 bloggers. Hardly a ‘drop’ in the bucket of the blogosphere (I couldn’t resist the pun!).

So, in May, I’ve decided I’m going to talk about bloggers on the leading edge of global transformation. And how this humble platform of ours can, quite literally, change the world.

We have tremendous gifts to share. We all have stepped up. We are all living our purpose, and leading by example. We have already made a difference.
So how are you going to continue to change the world today? :)

Thanks, Wendy for the generous honor and mention. I’m excited to hear more about your conference and read all of these other blogs you’ve mentioned.

It’s true…when you think about changing the world it seems daunting, but not when you think about the ripple effect and how we’re all connected anyways. It’s just a matter of time before the whole world will feel the influence of your positive energy and what you’re trying to achieve here….what we’re ALL trying to achieve, uplift, inspire…my slogan for entrepreneurs is “make a wish, make it happen”, thanks for making THIS happen.

    Oh goodness girl!

What a post! I feel so honored to be one of your 17 super-bloggers…I love what you say about teh ripple effect and the compunded interest. People sometimes forget that it’s the little actions, words, and gestures that truly impact the BIG picture.

Thank YOU for the reminder that our blogs is our “mission” work. Sometimes I forget that it is making an impact! And thank YOU for sharing your own “stuff” so openly and honestly too…

    Keep on shining lady,
    Kam:)
ps…let me know when and where that conference is!

Thanks for including me. I appreciate it.

    You know…
I found a way to keep from being bothered by the trolls that make negative comments on my site.

I just tell myself they are the universe’s (dare I say God’s) way of reminding me to never stop learning and growing.

So they are a good thing!
