You Don’t Have to Be a Jerk to Enjoy a Big Ego

A friendly place to find help & encourage one another

As I chuckle to myself after reading my own headline, I feel pretty good about who I am. I know that I am worthy. I know that no matter what challenge any of my clients have, I can help them move through it if they are committed to change. I know that my time is valuable, and I value it highly. I enjoy and embrace the lavish rewards of life, because I know I deserve it.

Do I have a big ego?

Yep! It is critical to my success.

Lest you misunderstand me, allow me to put this into perspective for you. ;)
As I blogged yesterday, my business is an extension of who I am - and the same goes for you. If I have some deep hidden beliefs about being unworthy or conflicting emotions about what I deserve in life, where do you think those beliefs are going to manifest? In my business.

As business challenges arise, the VERY first place I look to resolve them is within myself. To take it a step further, here is an excerpt from Joe Vitale’s The Attractor Factor that discusses taking total responsibility for our experience (it’s a bit more extreme than I was going to get into on this post, but I do agree with the premise of this work).

So in order for my business to succeed, these are some of the musts I have put into place in my belief system:

  • I know that I deserve success
  • I know that I am worthy of the business I generate
  • I know that I offer massive value to my clients
  • I know that the wealth I generate simply magnifies all of my great thoughts, actions and deeds, which increases my impact on this planet
  • I know that as my business grows, it will help to transform this world

I can’t afford to indulge in negative thinking. I will not succeed if I temper my beliefs with things that might diminish my identity. And neither will you.

Now, let me add one more thing that is critical to entreprenurial success:

Keeping values in the right order.

Ego doesn’t work, doesn’t serve you, your clients, or anyone else when ego is number one. We all know people like this - they seem to be a hollow shell of “I’m all about Me”. In fact, I can’t even call it ego - because for these people, their “ego” is simply a cover up of their lack of self-worth.

Here’s what I believe to be the key distinction:

When ego is number one, you are putting yourself above everyone else to feel more important :: you want others to stay beneath you.
When ego is in it’s proper place, you are living your life as an example, and working hard to help everyone else get what they want too :: you want others to join you - or even surpass you!

That’s why the people who are truly successful are not just wealthy and sitting on their laurels. They are actively working to share their knowledge with everyone.

Oprah, Jack Canfield, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, even a few bloggers come to mind…

So build yourself up. Give yourself a pat on the back. Toot your own horn.

Live your life, and run your business, as an example… not a warning. Build up your ego, and watch as your business grows along with it.
